Delph Donkey Scarecrow Trail
Delph Community Association has organised the Delph Donkey Scarecrow Trail as part of the Saddleworth Festival celebrations.
The Scarecrow trail seems to have been enjoyed by all. As well as those who followed the trail and guessed the clues, the local businesses, community groups and individuals who made and hosted the Scarecrows all entered into the spirit of the occasion and made the event a community success! It was wonderful to see groups of people of all different ages wandering around our lovely village of Delph clutching their trail guides (all easily identified by the bright orange coloured cover!) and earnestly looking for the next numbered scarecrow.
Over 400 trail guides were sold and 108 completed entries were handed in to the Post Office. The winners of the First Prize-a £50 voucher for a meal donated by The Old Bell were Jill and Andrew Davis and the second prize of two theatre tickets for next season donated by The Delph Theatre were won by Sam and Lucy Hilton.Well done to the winners and many thanks to all who supported the event by taking part and selling the trail guides especially the Post Office who were an essential part of the organisation.
A special thanks must be said to all who sponsored the trail guide and donated prizes for the lucky winners.
A special mention to the Sponsors of the event goes to The Old Bell Inn, Delph.
Cunbar Automotive Paint Suppliers and Saddleworth Funeral Services.
The winner of the best scarecrow by public vote was Captain Hook (see below for pic!) by Josie Whitehead for which she was awarded a cup at the AGM of Delph Community Association meeting.
Here are pictures of some of the Donkey scarecrows...

The scarecrows can be found mainly in the village centre; however a circular trail beginning and ending at Delph Library/Millgate Arts Centre can be followed down to the A62 crossroads, past the Old Bell Inn, onto Hillend to Denshaw road, past Delph School, Down Pingle Lane and back to the village centre via Chapel Gardens. This offers a very pleasant tour around the village.
The Scarecrows are lifesize "donkeys" representing characters from the world of books, film and theatre. There are 20 in all and they will be on view during the week of the Festival 2nd to 10th of June. You have to find them all and identify the character that each represents.
The trail provides a fun activity for everyone and all proceeds go towards the running costs of Delph Library and the Millgate Arts Centre.
Trail Guides/entry forms (£1) available from The Post Office, The Library, The Theatre, The Old Bell Inn, Millgate Hair Studios, The Bull, The Chemist's, Delph School and The Craft Shop
