What is Home Watch ?
Greater Manchester Police are committed to the Concept of Home Watch, whereby residents and Police co-operate in a joint venture aimed at reducing crime opportunities.
The basic objectives of Home Watch are to:-
1. Reduce local opportunities for Crime, thereby deterring would be thieves and vandals.
2. Establish a community spirit so that mutual co-operation and communication can be achieved. I.e. looking out for each other, and working together when confronted with community problems.
3. Inform the street co-ordinator and the Police of any suspicious activity. (incidents in
Progress should, of course, always be reported to the police).
4. Encourage people to keep a “weather eye” on the more vulnerable residents i.e. children and the elderly.
It is the individual members of a Home Watch Scheme that give it its real meaning. Their day-to-day interest and awareness is the key factor which determines how well the scheme works.
It is important that members appreciate that the Police do not wish to run Home watch Schemes. Whilst the Police will render every assistance in getting the Scheme off the ground, it is fundamentally the members scheme and its success will depend on the enthusiasm of the co-ordinator and local residents. The Divisional Watch Scheme Administrator will offer his/her support and will help to sustain interest within Schemes by maintaining contact with the residents.

She does not appear to have had anything stolen.
She describes the men as white, 5 foot 7, one blonde, one dark, of ordinary build, and in late 20's"
Warning:
Police in Oldham have seized 31 ball bearing (bb) guns from a town centre shop as they clamp down on the sale of these potentially dangerous presents in the run up to Christmas.
Retailers are being reminded about new legislation that came into force on October 1 this year making it now illegal to manufacture, import or sell any realistic or imitation guns. These include soft air guns, starter pistols, cigarette lighters, blank firers and cap guns.
It still remains a criminal offence to carry an imitation gun in a public place without lawful authority or reasonable excuse.
Officers will be visiting schools to educate children and young people around the Borough about the use of bb guns that they already own or may get for Christmas.
Chief Superintendent Caroline Ball said: “It is important that parents think twice before buying these guns as Christmas presents. They cannot be carried outside of the home and could get your child into serious trouble with the police if used irresponsibly”.
Oldham Town Centre Sergeant, Gary Watters added: “I have previously worked in the Tactical Firearms Unit and am only too aware of how realistic these imitations are. When you’re called to a report of someone in possession of a gun you only have a split second to decide whether it’s real or fake – even to the trained eye, it’s extremely difficult to tell the difference.”
Warning:Yet again another Bogus Water Official. Please stress to your members/neighbours that the Water Board will only call if you have an internal Water Meter that requires reading. All the stories of "checking water pressure", "checking colour of water" etc are absolute rubbish.
Please be aware of visitors. Always make a thorough examination of the "ID" card. In the case of United Utilities get the number off the card, close and lock the door and ring 0845 746 1100, ignore any menus and, when you speak to an operator, ask for Extension 60300. They will tell you if the "ID" card is genuine and if they have staff operating in the area. Keep these numbers near to the door. If the visitor/s are not genuine, phone the Police.
United Utilities offer a free Password Scheme whereby the occupier can ask a caller for a pre-arranged password. Please inform your members of this. For further details contact United Utilities on 0845 746 1100 or the Minicom Number is 0808 143 1195.
Ensure that all elderly people are aware of this. It is mainly elderly people who are the target of these Bogus callers.
Here is just one example of of how these people operate. Although this one is from Huddersfield it applies anywhere.
NORTHFIELD GROVE LOCKWOOD 30/11/2007 10:30 HOME OF ELDERLY COUPLE.
"Suspect 1 knocked on the door and stated he was working on the gas and water and asked to check the water in the house. He was allowed entry. Once inside he took both occupants to one corner of the kitchen and was speaking
about the electric fire.
Suspect 2 then entered the house unseen and went upstairs and did an untidy search. Using a power tool from the small bedroom, cut away the shelf in the large bedroom cupboard which the safe was attached to. Suspect 1 then kept the victims talking and took them both out of the house to the rear of the property and kept them talking about the garden. Whilst in the garden suspect 1 made a call from his mobile phone prior to leaving.
Suspect description:
White male, Chunky build, 5' 6" tall, Straight, short black hair, Wearing grey vertical striped short sleeved shirt, dark trousers and thick gloves. Presentable, smart appearance."
